Cancer (Hematology/Oncology)

As the pediatric hematologists/oncologists at the Ronald McDonald® Children’s Hospital, we provide diagnosis and management of anemia; bone marrow failure syndrome; bleeding disorders, including thrombocytopenia and coagulopathy; hemoglobinopathies, such as sickle cell disorder; and other hematological disorders.

Additionally, physicians treat children with cancers such as leukemia and solid tumors. We treat children every day, so we know how to help your child feel more comfortable and at ease. We also offer the following programs:

• Return to School – Our social worker and nurse will visit your child's teachers to discuss any educational issues that might arise during treatment.
• Special Friends – This unique American Cancer Society program pairs our medical students with children who have cancer in supportive Big Brother/Big Sister-type arrangements.

Our multidisciplinary staff includes a board-certified pediatric hematologist/oncologist, certified pediatric oncology nurses, a case manager/clinical nurse specialist, a pharmacist and a pediatric clinical social worker.

In addition, we host a family clinic, providing consultation, diagnosis and treatment for young patients with conditions such as:

• Hemolytic and bone marrow failure disorders
• Coagulation disorders
• Thrombocytopenia
• Platelet function disorders

Research
Loyola is committed to remaining at the forefront of research in the areas of pediatric hematology and oncology. Through its membership in the Children's Oncology Group, we participate in clinical trials and studies for pediatric conditions such as:

• Leukemia
• Lymphoma
• Brain tumors
• Neuroblastoma
• Wilms' tumor
• Rhabdomyosarcoma and other soft-tissue sarcomas
• Bone malignancies
