| LOYOLA CEO DR. PAUL WHELTON HONORED BY HUNGARIAN HYPERTENSION SOCIETY |
| MAYWOOD, Il. -- Loyola University Health System President and CEO Dr. Paul K. Whelton, one of the world's leading researchers in the causes and prevention of high blood pressure, has been elected an honorary member of the Hungarian Society of Hypertension.Whelton was honored Dec. 2 during the opening ceremony of the Annual Congress of the Hungarian Society of Hypertension, held at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in Budapest. He was among two foreign scientists awarded honorary membership. The society cited Whelton for his lifetime contributions to the science underpinning prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease, and for his global commitment to the field."I am honored to receive this award," Whelton said. "The Hungarian Society of Hypertension is among the many excellent organizations that are working to address the worldwide epidemic of hypertension, which is one of the key risk factors for cardiovascular disease."Following the award ceremony, Whelton gave the keynote address titled "Treatment and Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease: A Global Perspective." He later gave a second plenary session talk titled, "Hypertension and Diabetes: an Epidemiologic Perspective."Whelton has conducted a series of groundbreaking studies on the prevention and treatment of hypertension for the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases and the National Institute on Aging. He has published more than 400 papers on hypertension, and has been the principal investigator on more than $100 million of studies funded by the National Institutes of Health.Whelton is a frequent presenter and lecturer at scientific meetings, and has served as a consultant to numerous national and international health agencies and governments.In addition to being president and CEO of Loyola University Health System, Whelton is vice president, Health Sciences of Loyola University Chicago.
